RealNetworks is known for digital entertainment - from music to desktop video and games. Real collaborated with Method on a new endeavor aimed at making digital content truly portable, through a networked, portable video player with an easy-to-use touch screen interface.
Challenge
Method was tasked with designing a trend-setting user experience for a networked, portable, touchscreen video player. We had to both communicate the unique, differentiated qualities of the device and optimize the experience for non-networked situations (such as in the car). The device needed to be designed for the networked future: the device could be a TV-based version or a content source, playing media via HDMI to an additional device.
Approach
In collaboration with industrial design, software, and hardware teams, Method developed and tested 4 interaction models, and identified and explored three alternate scenarios of use. Ultimately, the selected concept could easily meet the needs of an entire family. Content breadth was critical - users did not care about the source of the content; they simply wanted content. Through multiple rounds of refinement and testing, the UI and Product Ecosystem were extended to include a complete set of features.
Outcome
Unlike portable DVD players, this device has significant storage (50 hours of video), and a large, high-quality display. RealNetwork's technology enables users to enjoy video from a variety of sources beyond their own saved media (movies, music, photos, and games) via a Wi-Fi connection. The Android-based device also supports traditional PC sync capabilities and can grab content directly off of a variety of USB connected devices such as an external hard-drive or DVD player.
Method offers a rational and intuitive approach to solving complex brand challenges in all traditional and digital media.
