I found myself on Eyebeam's website last week, while working on a news brief for the 2008 Machina Film Festival nominations. Eyebeam is an art and technology center based in New York, focused on the incubation of creativity and thought. Much like Method, Eyebeam unites artists and technologists to actively engage with culture, design, and emerging technologies.
Eyebeam.org is also, to the best of my knowledge, the oldest Method-designed website still live on the Web (circa 2002). In this age of constantly shifting technologies and sensibilities, it's great to see a design that continues to function - particularly for an organization at the forefront of technology and design.
A few of my other favorite "early" web projects include:
- AmericanApparel.net: the photo viewer, 2004 (read the case study)
- Clemson School of Architecture: the whole site, 2005 (read the case study)
- MOMA Workspheres, the whole site, 2001. Yes, it's older than eyebeam, but it's simply archived and not in regular use, so I'm disqualifying it from the oldest competition.
Method itself is nearing its 10th anniversary, and we're planning a retrospective of the company's history that will be posted here, on method.com. Stay tuned.
