Method designer Tomi Lahdesmaki has a new title: toy designer. His creation, Cortez the Melody Maker, is the latest in an impressive line of vinyl figures from BIC Plastics. Cortez can be removed from his included base and can rest comfortably on all sorts of objects—speakers, shelf, etc. The limited edition collectible is now available online.
Who's Cortez? Here's the official back story:
Tomi: I was contacted by the company Bic Plastics from China because they saw some of my character drawings on Pictoplasma and they wanted to collaborate with me. I approached the project by creating a toy character that would be my ultimate favorite toy, one that I would buy in a heartbeat. I drew various drawings of Cortez from multiple angles and they had a guy in China who made the original mold. The character was molded very well and it looks identical to my drawings.
Cortez is an old man living in an ancient little town in Spain. His passion is music and he loves what he does. His days are simple, he travels the streets of his hometown and sets up in various places playing the tunes of old through his love - the accordion.
