The Academy of Machinima Arts & Sciences (AMAS) has announced winners for the 2008 Machinima Film Festival. The awards ceremony was held on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at Eyebeam, a multi-disciplinary art and technology center in Manhattan.
"Leaving the Game," produced by Method's VP of Media & Entertainment John Gilles, in conjunction with the American Film Institute, was awarded the Best Technical Achievement award. Unlike the 16 other categories, entrants cannot submit for Technical Achievement - the jury rewards it at their sole discretion to the film which best demonstrates technical innovation in machinima production.
“Leaving the Game” is a 6-minute pilot episode that can be rendered on the fly, allowing playback to be completely personalized based on the viewer. In the series, Amber is an assassin turned civilian who is being chased down by former employers. A unique viewer experience is created with product placements on the sets, the language the characters use, and adjustable maturity rating. The sets used in “Leaving the Game” were built in the Half-Life game environment where they can exist for use and re-use depending on the nature of each episode.
