More people than ever are turning to the internet for breaking international news. Link TV wanted to create a news app for audiences overwhelmed by the glut of online video and underwhelmed by mainstream coverage of international news.
Challenge
Link TV is an independent digital media company and television network dedicated to providing US audiences with global perspectives on news and culture. After launching a powerful, video-based website, Link TV wanted to extend its reach with an iOS application able to provide an even more immersive and action-oriented experience for readers.
Approach
Having partnered with Method to launch ViewChange.org in 2010, Link TV reengaged Method to design the iPad application's core interaction design and visual look and feel. Method aimed to create an intuitive news app that would allow readers to explore the rich library of international television news, raw videos, and documentaries curated by the seasoned journalists at Link TV.
With the Link TV team, Method helped to create LinkTV World News, an app with an array of tools for news junkies who only want the most informative, relevant, and trustworthy information. For each story, detail screens immerse viewers with semantically related content, documentaries, up-to-the minute Twitter updates, and blog posts from the story's country of origin. The app suggests additional topics to explore and ways for readers to take action, and an interactive world map allows users to explore news by location and across time. Simply put, the LinkTV World News app connects audiences to global news sources unlike any other provider.
Outcome
By enabling people to change the way they discover, understand, and act on the issues they care about, the LinkTV World News app creates an elevated experience for engaging with the news stories happening around the globe everyday.
Launched in November 2012, in its first week in the iTunes App Store, the app reached #1 in the "News" category. It has been extremely well received by the media, with major news sources and tech blogs raving about the app's features. "LinkTV World News is basically an alternative video news outlet that can help you find stories you'll likely miss if you spend most of your time on mainstream news sites and Youtube," said NBC News. Most recently, Reuter's Deputy Social Media Editor, Matthew Keys, named the app as one of 'Five iOS apps every news junkie should download right now'.
