DIY Health in 2012

It seems like 2012 will be a highlight year for healthcare technology. There has been a rise of health-based organizations paving the way in mobile, web, as well as app development, designing devices that allow consumers to lead a more health-conscious lifestyle. The focus has been on making information on your current health, as well as fitness and diet tips to improve it, extremely accessible.

These devices work to empower consumers and lessen the need for constant visits to the doctor’s office by moving health monitoring and check-in’s with physicians to the digital space.

However, while it is fascinating that innovations are being made around data aggregation, ‘social fitness’, and convenient tracking, the future of healthcare intelligence will rely on more of a holistic health perspective. Applications and devices should, and potentially will, understand your genetic history, past injuries, biometric data, and how that correlates with your day-to-day activity, as well as external factors such as geographic location and weather patterns that ultimately play into your health.

The Next Web covered this subject in their recent report on the The Future of Health and Fitness, outlining some leading companies that are developing devices that are more insightful and useful health resources.

TrendWatching.com also showcased a few of the innovative apps and devices that are making an impact in the health space. Here are two:

Ford demonstrated three apps offering in-car health monitoring, enabling drivers to access certain mobile health apps while driving to keep track of chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma.

Pain Free Back, an interactive back pain relief product, lets users enter specific data as they’re taken on a guided discovery about their back pain.
